Control Executive Group
Control Executive group enables accountable business leaders to develop and maintain a strong control environment through joint accountability with line of business, regional and functional aligned control teams, providing comprehensive coverage to drive early identification and sustainable mitigation of operational risk.

The Role
We have an exciting opportunity to fill (3) Business Risk & Control Senior Directors. Each role will report directly to the Control Executives for the following Lines of Business:
  • Wealth and Investment Management (WIM)
    WIM businesses build enduring client relationships through sound, thoughtful and objective advice. Services include comprehensive planning and advice, investment management, brokerage, private banking, estate planning strategies, trust, insurance and both individual and institutional retirement.
  • Corporate & Investment Bank (CIB)
    CIB delivers a comprehensive suite of banking, capital markets and advisory solutions, including a full complement of sales, trading and research capabilities, to corporate, government and institutional clients. We focus on our clients' overall financial needs, with consideration and respect for their total relationship with Wells Fargo.
  • Consumer Lending (CL)
    CL businesses include Home Lending, Auto, Credit Cards, Retail & Merchant Services, Personal Lending, and Consumer Lending Control. CL provides important products and services that are critical to helping our customers meet their financial needs.

We are looking for Business Control Senior Directors to join our team and bring prior control design and operating effectiveness assessment experience to the Front Line. The right candidate will be responsible for evaluating controls to ensure proactive self-identification of issues and events, root cause analysis, resolution of control deficiencies and provides insight into emerging risks while operating in a very dynamic manner, connecting and building relationships with key partners.

Position Responsibilities

The accountabilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Identify, assess and mitigate risks across all risk types, in coordination with LOB and assurance activities consistent with the risk management framework and policies established by Independent Risk Management.
  • Directs control evaluations, which may vary in complexity and risk level, and should perform quality reviews of these evaluations. Expert-level understanding of quality reviews to ensure the accuracy of evaluation scope, test scripts, assessment results, and control deficiencies identified.
  • Directs the development, maintenance and execution of control evaluation test scripts and evaluation strategies.
  • Ensures control evaluations are completed on schedule. Develops, maintains and executes the Evidenced-Base Control Evaluation Plan. Establishes benchmarks for timely tracking and completion.
  • Manages control deficiencies and determines next steps. Identifies repeat control deficiencies and ensures they are documented appropriately.
  • Confirms control deficiencies discovered during the completion of the control evaluation are properly documented. Ensures escalated existing risks, emerging risks, and common themes are socialized across business groups and enterprise functions.
  • Nurtures strong relationships with team and collaborate effectively. Ensures coordination with team, line of business, other business units. Provides transparency and accuracy to regulators, Audit, other internal risk and line of business stakeholders and provide risk perspective and recommendations as appropriate.
  • Completes applicable documentation in accordance with requirements.
  • Works closely with each of the Control Executive program leaders to lead and promote a strong risk culture to ensure effective communication and collaborative partnerships.
  • Represents Control Evaluation team with corporate, Business Group CEOs, Enterprise Function Leaders, Legal, Audit, and externally with third party service providers, regulators, and industry partners on risk related topics.
  • Expertly builds constructive and effective relationships. Considers a broad range of issues in making decisions. Delivers on commitments and renegotiates when needed. Strong sense of accountability.
  • Nurtures a culture of excellence by proactively attracting, retaining and developing a team of talented and diverse professionals.
  • Expertly evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of policies, procedures, processes, systems and internal controls; additional experience analyzing business and/or systems changes to determine impact.
  • Solicits and aggregates emerging risks from teams as control evaluations are performed. Provides status updates to key stakeholders on programs and specific control evaluations where warranted.
  • Interfaces internally with the team, corporate, Business Group CEOs, Enterprise Function Leaders, Legal, Audit, and externally with third party service providers, regulators, and industry partners on risk related topics.
  • Dynamic leader role who supervises project/virtual teams and mentor less experienced managers.
  • Manages a team of Directors, Senior Managers, Managers, Associate Managers, or Senior Officers, Officers, Senior Associates, Associates, or cross-functional teams in accomplishing goals.


Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of management experience
  • 12+ years of experience in risk management (includes compliance, financial crimes, operational risk, audit, legal, credit risk, market risk, IT systems security, business process management) or 12+ years of financial services industry experience, of which 10+ years must include direct experience in risk management

  • Nurtures and mentors on building constructive and effective relationships
  • Effectively creates and implements control evaluation methodologies to support the target state
  • Expert-level with various quality assurance techniques
  • Audit or internal control evaluation experience
  • Risk management experience with demonstrated leadership skills and ability to mature risk management programs
  • Superior strategic influencing and consulting across a large organization and with various levels of leadership/stakeholders
  • Balance strong, innovative problem solving skills with the practical ability to implement workable solutions to problems in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
  • Strong risk and control fundamentals
  • Expertly communicates in both written and verbal formats with senior executive-level leaders
  • Expert understanding of enterprise risk management framework including risk identification, risk appetite and strategy, risk-related decisions, processes and controls, risk analytics and governance
  • Experience in assessing risk, reviewing risk ratings, and identifying control deficiencies
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills, especially with difficult topics when partnering with senior management. This includes the willingness and ability to question decisions, understand direction and escalate issues, where necessary
  • Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources and deliver results quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality output from all levels of the team
