AIG Risk Management (AIGRM) is the Primary Casualty and Alternative Risk business of AIG. Major lines of coverage provided are Workers Compensation, Auto Liability and General Liability. The majority of our clients retain large amounts of their risk via deductibles and self-insured retentions, but we also provide Guaranteed Cost or \"first-dollar\" programs for select customers. For claims, we provide unbundled {TPA) and bundled (AIGCS) capabilities. Our Alternative Risk business provides tailored solutions for hard-to-place coverages, multi-year and multi-line programs, and group captive solutions.


Based in our New York regional office, the AIGRM Underwriter will be responsible for:



  • Under limited direction, underwrites complex standard and non-standard products, new and renewals. Determines how pricing should be modified based on loss experience and is able to evaluate complex exposures.
  • The role will be responsible for underwriting the Workers' Compensation, General Liability and Auto Liability primary Casualty product lines.
  • Communicate risk appetite and AIGRM Value Proposition to brokers.
  • Evaluates risk and gives approval or declination for quotes.
  • Assist senior management with implementation of profit center strategic initiatives and provides technical underwriting and marketing support on other projects.
  • Reviews new distribution opportunities, identifies new business relationships, manages pipeline of opportunities and collaborates with region to ensure new opportunities are explored and pursued.
  • Ensures proper underwriting and rating of renewal business through actual case preparation and monitoring of Underwriters and Associate Underwriters.
  • Reviews the more difficult accounts and ensures that they are issued accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Assists in the training and development of Associate Underwriters and Underwriting Analysts while providing mentorship.
  • Has the knowledge and ability to explain the rationale behind the underwriting decisions made on an account.
  • Generates new business and provides underwriting guidance and appropriate rates for alternate plans at time of renewal.
  • Makes independent sales calls to market and cross-market products.
  • Refers declined business to other AIG divisions, as appropriate.
  • Identifies cross-selling opportunities.
  • Travels to broker/client meetings to serve as the AIGRM product expert and to identify cross selling opportunities.
  • Perform special requests for clients, which may include task such as business plan changes, or analyzing new agreements.

The Ideal Candidate will have:


  • 1-3 years of Commercial Insurance Company, Agency or Brokerage experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships.
  • Working knowledge of US Casualty lines of business (Workers' Compensation, Auto Liability, and General Liability) including product features, forms, regulatory environments and risks etc.
  • Demonstrated sales, marketing, and relationship building experience.
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented.
  • Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly changing environment, adapting to changing requirements and collaborating with a wide range of colleagues to quickly deliver solutions.
  • Willingness to be flexible, learn on the job, and maintain a can-do attitude.
  • Comfort with analytical tools and technology.
