Job Responsibilities:


  • Direct accountability for the underwriting results with respect to profitability and loss ratio
  • Management responsibility for the Small Business Underwriting Unit, Multinational Underwriting Strategy and Best Practices/Quality assurance
  • Matrix responsibility for the US Field Underwriting team as it relates to delegation of Underwriting Authority, Quality of the Underwriting Practice and referrals
  • Responsible for the quality of the underwriting practice, risk selection and pricing performance
  • Jointly responsible with product management for the achievement of growth objectives
  • Implement and execute on underwriting best practices and guidelines to ensure rating and pricing adequacy
  • Apply framework of Underwriting Authority and manage the delegation of authority to PA underwriters
  • Review new and renewal underwriting referrals over the limits of zonal authority and provide timely approval or modifications
  • Responsible for updating and reissuing underwriting guidelines (including reinsurance and treaty approvals), manuals, policies and procedures
  • Ensure effective utilization of monitoring standards including quality reviews to assess underwriting results and loss ratios
  • Ensure the quality of the underwriting practice . Manage the self audit process and coordinate/schedule annual audits. Develop and implement action plans based on audit recommendations and findings
  • Responsible for the operational execution of the underwriting process, including service levels, error rates, customer satisfaction, and underwriting leakage rates
  • Responsible for continuous improvement of underwriting productivity through implementation of underwriting strategies (automation, referral process, etc)to optimize efficiency. Liaise with operations, systems, legal, claims, FP&A and other functions to ensure awareness of underwriting activities that require support and service
  • Support the development of new products and/or product enhancements. Create and/or approve policy wording including terms, conditions and limits
  • Review business analytics and provide leadership in the decision making on required actions. Ensure execution on agreed upon underwriting corrective action plans
  • Ensure that compliance related queries are being responded to in appropriate manner and that legal and compliance are engaged
  • Partner with Global PA Underwriting Officer and Consumer Business Training on the development of PA technical training and underwriting L&D programs. Build technical training requirements into career development plans

Job Requirements:


  • Preferred minimum of 10 plus years of underwriting and/product experience, with at least 5 years of underwriting operational management experience with Personal Accident insurance products
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance placement
  • Analytical and quantitative skills
  • Strong customer service ethic, with a sound understanding of the business processes
  • Ability to read and analyze P&L statements with an understanding of the key performance indicators
  • Knowledge of market segmentation, portfolio management, acquisition and multiple distribution systems
