The Global Claims & Operations Legal Department is currently seeking Associate General Counsel for its New York office. This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel, Global Claims & Operations.



Primary Responsibilities : This is a dynamic, high-profile position for a self-starting bankruptcy lawyer. Primary responsibilities include:



  • Advising the Underwriters and Collections regarding bankruptcy in a wide variety of matters, including: renewals, non-renewals and cancellation in bankruptcy, impact of the automatic stay, set offs, return premium, and other accounting issues
  • Reviewing, negotiating and objecting to plans of reorganization regarding filing deadlines, impact on insurance, jurisdiction, set offs and policy assumption
  • Preparing and reviewing assumption motions and cure notices
  • Drafting assumption agreements and language for quotes for policies with premium over $1 million
  • Providing guidance to Claims, TPAs, bankruptcy coordinator and paralegals on bankruptcy related issues, including retention of files, claims handling, motions lifting the stay, payment of counsel and proofs of claim
  • Handling billing related matters, including direct bill issues, invoice format and regulatory issues
  • Handling premium finance issues
  • Designing and presenting bankruptcy training for Underwriters, Claims, and Collections
  • Developing and updating bankruptcy procedures and protocols
  • Assisting with non-bankruptcy related issues as requested, including drafting and negotiating Service Agreements, Statements of Work, and Change Orders

Job Requirements:


  • 8 years of bankruptcy experience with a law firm and/or multinational insurance company
  • Strong research, drafting and analytical skills
  • Strong negotiating and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers and internal clients
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify issues, gather and organize relevant information, devise solutions and action plans and obtain requisite support from business and law department leaders
  • Member in good standing of the bar in at least one state required
