Personal Help For Tsunami Victims Will Leitch and John Churchill Feb 1, 2005 12:00 PM Countless contributions have been made for victims of the devastating tsunami that has killed more than 160,000 people. But one UBS advisor provided some relief of his own. John Alex, a UBS advisor based in New York, took 10 days leave to volunteer in Southeast Asia after the devastating tsunami. Alex spent time in Sri Lanka and Bangkok. Alex, 38, says the disaster struck a chord inside him, much like Sept. 11. “I lost a lot of friends in the attacks, and the gut reaction to the situation in the Southeast now feels a lot like that.” Meanwhile, Citigroup announced a $3 million contribution; Merrill Lynch pledged $1 million to the American Red Cross and several other firms announced donations, including securities industry employment Web site BrokerHunter.com, which is devoting 5 percent of its advertising sales revenue to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. |
